Little J - A Kansas Treasure

Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park aka Little J is located in Western Kansas. It's just south of Oakley which is a quick 30 minute drive right off of I-70. Easy to get to and a must see if you are in the area.

Little J is a mini-badlands, made up of Niobrara Chalk Formations dating back millions of year ago when Kansas was an inland sea. These formations provide a valuable habitat for many plants and wildlife. Little J is home to the largest population of Great Plains Wild Buckwheat. Fossils of giant clams, oysters, and the remains of swimming and flying reptiles have been discovered here.

Little J was owned by the McGuire Family Ranch for 5 generations before they decided to allow this beautiful space to be shared with the public - it is now owned by The Nature Conservatory who have partnered with Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. Some of the chalk formations are 100 feet tall and can be viewed from one of two trails that allow visitors to explore the area. (please stay on the trail unless you have scheduled a private tour - you can do this by calling 620-872-2061) Restrooms and picnic tables are located near the entrance to the park. As always, remember to leave no trace!

I have been fortunate to visit this park twice - the first time we just hit the trails and most recently on a guided tour and it was definitely worth seeing the formations up close and personal!
